Product Photography

It’s the art of making the ordinary look extraordinary.

These are photos that we have all seen since we were kids.  We all remember looking through those advertisements in the Sunday newspaper for the toys we wanted from Santa.  And who doesn’t know about the Sears catalog?  It used to be the flagship of catalogs.  Hundreds of products, hundreds of pages for all of the categories you can imagine.

Product photography goes back even further back thousands of years ago, to the time artists painted pictures of grapes, bread and wine on a table.  They painted on canvas, walls, windows and even ceilings.  There are many masterpieces that caught our eye by the arrangement of the food to the angle of the light, or the shape of the clouds.

Even though our equipment is more suffocated today, we still need the skills and that something that catches our eye as we turn the pages in a magazine.
To this day there is still so much to learn from those old masters.

Product photography these days looks simple enough.  Just place an item on a white background and snap a picture.  It’s so simple, right?   Wrong.   It takes an artist with patients and an eye for the smallest detail.   Some items take hours to set up before the first snap of the shutter.   There are lights, filters, reflectors, special lenses, and lots and lots of other equipment that go into the shot.

So the next time you are lining the bottom of your bird cage, don’t use the advertising section… use the editorial section.
